Tonight’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump will likely leave traders with more questions than answers about how each candidate will use Executive power under the Constitution to drive expansion in the economy.
The top concern of most Americans is how each candidate proposes to put a car in every garage and a chicken in every pot. The top concern of every trader is having growth in their trading account by the end of the day.
What is slowly seeping into the discussion around tonight’s debate is the role of the Congress. Almost none of the shoot from the hip proposals offered by Ms. Harris or Mr. Trump will leave the holster without Congressional approval and before traders engage in the game theory of whose proposal will do the most harm or most good to their trading accounts, the question should be which party is likely to take control of both chambers of Congress.

The moderators of this debate are focusing on highlight reels that can take network viewership into the weekend. Given the reality that most of what the candidates say tonight will be puffery, focusing specifically on the Article II duties of the President would be the best educational course for the electorate.
Traders would pay attention while munching on their favorite brand of popcorn, but that should be the extent of the seriousness placed on tonight’s debate.
